What is VAT?
Value Added Tax (VAT) is a UK tax imposed on the value added to goods and services by VAT registered businesses at each stage of production. For businesses, knowing what VAT is, when you need to register and how to file VAT returns is vital to remaining compliant with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). If you are VAT registered you must charge your customers or clients VAT on the applicable goods and services and pay this to HMRC.
Understanding VAT will allow you, as a business owner, to minimise your tax liability by reclaiming input VAT on anything you purchase in the delivery of your goods or services. Having an accountant who understands VAT and can help you through registration and quarterly VAT returns can be very beneficial to your business as not only can you be as tax efficient as possible but also an accountant can free up your time to allow you to focus on your business.

Who has to register for VAT?
You must register for VAT if your business exceeds £90,000 turnover in a 12 month period, this does not have to be your financial year or a tax year it is simply any period.
Example: Between 10 July 2022 and 9 July 2023 your VAT taxable turnover is £100,000. That’s the first time it has gone over the VAT threshold. You must register by 30 August 2023. Your effective date of registration is 1 September 2023.
Voluntary VAT registration if your turnover is under the threshold
If your turnover is less than the £90,000 threshold then you can still register voluntarily. For some businesses there are advantages to registering for VAT despite not having crossed the registration threshold. By choosing to register voluntarily, you can reclaim VAT on business expenses, enhancing tax efficiency. Furthermore voluntary registration allows companies to appear more established and can make you appear more credible. Additionally, being VAT-registered can be beneficial if your clients are also registered, as they can reclaim the VAT you charge. If you are uncertain about voluntary registration, Sherwin Currid offers expert advice tailored to your specific business needs and we will gladly discuss the advantages and disadvantages of voluntary registration for your specific case.
