Have you filed your 18/19 personal tax return yet?

While you still have plenty of time available to you with the deadline being 21 Jan 2020, it could be worthwhile to start thinking about getting it submitted as HMRC regularly fines about 300,000 people for late submissions.

If you are required to submit a personal tax return, but miss the deadline you will receive an initial late filing fee of £100 which applies even if there is no extra tax to pay or you have already paid the tax and have just forgotten to submit the form.

After 3 months additional daily penalties of £10 per day apply up to £900 and after 6 months there is an additional penalty of the larger of 5% of the tax due or £300.

HMRC sometimes will waiver penalties if you have a reasonable excuse which is genuine and legitimate.
