Online self assessment submissions – facts and figures

5.8 million taxpayers submitted their 2007/08 tax returns online by the 31 Jan 09 deadline. This is about 2/3 of all tax returns. The busiest time was Friday afternoon on 30 Jan when 390,000 returns were submitted.

As is normal practice, the 15,000 people who submitted their return on 1 Feb will escape the £100 late filing penalty even though the return is technically late.

HMRC has confirmed that an astonishing 620 people filed UK tax returns on Christmas Day last year, using the online e-filing system.

The figure comprises 396 individuals who completed their own self-assessment return, with the remaining 224 being accountants submitting returns on behalf of clients.

The previous Christmas Day saw 489 self-assessment returns received. Of these, 99 came from agents and 390 by individuals.

Someone needs to buy these people better presents!
